During Rosh Hashanah night, the ancient tradition is to bring symbolic foods to the table at the beginning of the festive meal. The pomegranate, which ripens around the time of Rosh Hashanah, is one of the most prominent of these symbolic foods. We recite the following entreaty that the many seeds of the pomegranate should be an omen for the coming year: “May it be Your will, Hashem, our G-d and the G-d of our forefathers, that our merits increase as the seeds of the pomegranate.”
